Network Assessment Automation

Consultant Edition

Consultant Edition (CE) applies the concept of Computer-Aided Network Engineering (CANE) to network assessment and is the only visual network assessment automation software.  Consultant Edition features:

  • A State-Of-The-Art Network Discovery Engine
  • Comprehensive Document Automation Including
    • Diagram Automation in Visio format
    • Assessment Document Automation in Word format
    • Inventory Reporting in CSV format
  • A Map-Driven Assessment Environment

With NetBrain Consultant Edition, network assessment is no longer a manual process.

Network consultants often work on complex network assessment projects with limited information and tight schedules.  Challenges include:

  • Understanding unfamiliar networks in a short time frame
  • Dealing with incomplete and inaccurate documentation from customers
  • Lacking full access to the live network
  • Spending a lot of time in authoring network assessment documents, including diagramming

NetBrain Consultant Edition tackles these challenges with a novel approach: A visual network assessment workbench powered by the Computer-Aided Network Engineering engine.  This self-contained software, installed in a consultant’s laptop, features:

  • Advanced Network Discovery
NetBrain’s discovery engine uses our unique "Neighbor-Walking" algorithm that emulates a human engineer’s actions.  It is faster, yet much more thorough, than traditional "discovery by brute force" SNMP scans.  During discovery, NetBrain collects in-depth network knowledge including routing, multicasting, VRF design, etc.
  • Configuration-Based Network Modeling and Assessment
Many times, consultants are unable to access their customers’ live networks. With NetBrain, this is no longer a problem.  NetBrain allows for network assessment to be carried out simply by using the customer network configuration files.
  • A Map-Driven Network Assessment Environment
Inside the visual network assessment workbench, consultants are able to quickly familiarize themselves with new networks because in-depth network information is embedded inside NetBrain’s data-driven maps.  The network assessment process will start with building dynamic Q-maps by automation, and then dive into the assessment details from the map.
  • Automatic Generation of Assessment Documentation
After a network assessment instance is defined by a few data-driven maps, creating network assessment documentation is fully automated.  The results include professional-grade Visio diagrams, customizable network assessment documents in Word format, and inventory reports in CSV format.

NetBrain Consultant Edition has fundamentally changed how consultants work with their customers’ networks.  With automation in discovery, knowledge extrapolation and documentation, consultants now only spend a fraction of the time to complete network assessment projects.

Consultant Edition Key Features

Network Discovery

The portable discovery engine inside Consultant Edition leverages similar technology as in the Enterprise Suite and Discovery Appliance.  It not only discovers network devices, but also the underlying design of a network.  Compared to the traditional discovery tools, the NetBrain discovery engine has:

  • Faster Discovery Speed
Up to 2,000 network devices per hour
  • Higher Accuracy
Nearly 99% accuracy with controlled multi-run discovery
  • Broader-Coverage
Detection of MPLS clouds or DMZ isolated network segments, and over 4,000 models of network devices from many vendors

After discovery, all data is parsed into a comprehensive data model (workspace) and ready for further analysis.  For more information, click the links below. (Note that each link will bring you to the description of a similar Operator Edition feature)

Configuration File To Model

Consultant Edition supports a local workspace where different customer networks are isolated from each other.  Most of the time, users can build a local workspace through discovery.  In the case that the live network is not accessible, Consultant Edition can generate a network assessment workspace simply from network configuration files.  To further augment the model, users can import show-command results into the workspace.

A local workspace generated this way has similar capabilities to support network assessment automation as one generated via discovery.

On-Demand Mapping Automation

The foundation of the Computer-Aided Network Engineering (CANE) system is on-demand mapping automation.  Consultant Edition leverages Qmaps created on-demand to define the scope of network assessment.  In essence, each Qmap created inside Consultant Edition is a network assessment instance.

Document Automation

Using Consultant Edition, standard assessment documentation can be created with full automation.  This includes:

  • Professional grade Visio diagrams
  • Customizable network assessment documents in Word
  • Inventory reports in CSV format

Map-Driven Network Analysis

Consultants can leverage data-driven Q-maps with embedded knowledge to quickly understand a complex customer network.  Map-driven analysis is the corner stone for the visual network assessment environment.  Click the links below to explore each feature: (Note that each link will bring you to the description of a similar Operator Edition feature)

Visual Network Assessment Environment

NetBrain Consultant Edition provides a visual environment for all phases of the network assessment process - from network discovery to network analysis to assessment documentation.  Automation eliminates a large number of manual tasks associated with traditional network assessment.

Consultant Edition has also made network assessment virtual with the support of both online mode and offline mode.  When using the online mode, NetBrain is directly connected to the target live network.  Under the offline mode, full discovery and benchmark provide a virtual description of the live network, enabling consultants to work remotely on large network assessment projects as if they were there locally.

1. How is Consultant Edition licensed?
Consultant Edition is licensed by seat and by the size of the network it supports.

2. Is Consultant Edition a subset of Operator Edition?
Yes.  While the Consultant Edition has most of the features of the Operator Edition, it does not support visual troubleshooting, configuration and routing management, collaboration and application mapping.

3. Can Consultant Edition connect to the Enterprise Server?
No.  But data from NetBrain Enterprise Server can be manually imported to the Consultant Edition.

4. Can I install Consultant Edition in VMware and share it with others?
No.  Consultant Edition is designed as a portable solution for engineers in the field, and it is fixed to a seat.

5. What are the differences among the discovery engines in different editions?
The core of the discovery engine inside OE/ES, CE and Discovery Appliance are the same.  However, they are different in the applicable network: The OE/ES discovery engine is linked to one live network and the results are saved in the shared workspace.  The CE’s discovery can target any part of a network and the results are stored in the local workspace.  The number of devices supported in CE discovery is limited by the license purchased.  The Discovery Appliance can discover any network and there is no device count limit.  The output of Discovery Appliance is often exported to an inventory management system or a network workstation.
